What it is

What is burnout therapy?

Burnout therapy helps when long-term pressure at work has left you exhausted and running on empty. Together we look at what drained you, how to get your energy back, and what needs to change so it doesn’t happen again. Sessions are 50 minutes and 90 USD, in English or Norwegian, at Saigon Pearl, Binh Thanh, or online.

Recognising it

When you are running on empty

Most people who reach burnout have been coping well for a long time. They are often the reliable ones, the high achievers, the ones others lean on. Then one day, coping stops working. You might recognise yourself here:

  • Tired all the time. Weekends and holidays no longer refill you.
  • Dreading work. The dread starts on Sunday afternoon, or the moment you wake up.
  • Distant from work you used to care about. You feel cynical, flat or just going through the motions.
  • Struggling to think clearly. It is hard to concentrate or make decisions, and you make small mistakes that aren’t like you.
  • Little left for the people you love. You are short-tempered at home, or too drained to be with others.
  • A body that is paying the price. You sleep badly, catch every cold, or have headaches and tension.
  • Overwhelmed and stuck, or disconnected from yourself.

Many people come not sure what is wrong. Is it burnout, the place I work, or a change in what I want from my career? You don’t need to know before you come.

How it works

What burnout is, and what keeps it going

Burnout grows out of long-term stress at work that never gets the chance to settle. It shows up in three ways: exhaustion, distance from your work, and a feeling that you are getting less done however hard you try. The World Health Organization describes it as a work-related condition, not an illness.

Some of what drives it is in the job. Too much work, too little control over it, too little recognition, or work that goes against what you value.

Some of it is in how you carry the job. Finding it hard to say no, very high standards for yourself, the fear of being found out as not good enough, or a sense of worth that rests on performing. These keep you going long after your body has asked you to stop.

Burnout is like a battery that has run out. Pushing harder only drains it further.

The work

How therapy for burnout works

Getting your energy back

First we look at what is draining you right now, and what you can protect: sleep, small boundaries, and what you can let go of for a while.

Understanding how you got here

We look at what in the job, and what in you, kept you going past your limit. Often the same strengths that made you good at your work are what kept you from stopping.

Deciding what changes

Is it the workload, the place you work, or what you want from your career? We work out what matters most to you and what needs to change, and how to return to work, or make a change, without running yourself down again. For this part I often use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

The aim is not just to recover, but to work and live in a way that doesn’t empty you.

Along the way

What to expect

  • Sessions are usually weekly and last 50 minutes.
  • How long it takes depends on how long you have been running on empty and what lies underneath it. Ask me at the end of a first session and I will give you an honest estimate, then revise it with you as we go.
  • If you lead others, there is also a structured 10-session programme for leaders and professionals.

Questions

Questions people ask

They can look alike. Both can bring exhaustion, low energy and losing interest in things. Burnout is usually tied to work, and tends to ease as work and rest change. Depression tends to colour the whole of life, including time off. They can also come together. You don’t need to sort this out before you come. We can work it out together.

They often overlap, and both can leave you tense, tired and unable to switch off. Burnout usually grows out of long-term pressure, often at work, and eases as the pressure and recovery change. Anxiety tends to follow you into calm periods too. You don’t need to sort this out before you come. We can work it out together.

It varies. Burnout that built up over a short, intense period often needs less time than exhaustion that has been there for years. Sessions are usually weekly. At the end of a first session I will give you an honest estimate, and we revise it together as we go.
